The noble building so extensively known as "The Tremont Temple" had its origin in the desire of Deacon Timothy Gilbert primarily, and of those who became his coadjutors afterward, to open in the city of Boston a centrally located house of worship with free seats, on some self-supporting plan, where all, whatever might be their condition or circumstances in life, should have an opportunity to hear the Gospel and enjoy the means of grace.
