Their prophet, Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon religion, was arrested and incarcerated in the old Carthage jail. A mob thronged the jail and shot Smith. I have passed the jail many a time and saw where Smith was murdered. While I was there it was used as a private residence. Since then the Mormons have purchased it and turned it into a Mormon museum.
