"At first they praised and extolled the enterprise of the English and to enumerate the advantages of the place. " Soon however, he testifies, "they saw the situation with a military eye, and discovered that the ground was badly chosen, as another fort properly placed, would have cut them off" from both the river and the sea. " ^ "Such is the only known description of the place written at that period. They were evidently impressed by the magnitude of the work.
