The Tenth Century— 901 to 1000.
Hucbaldus of St Amand in Flanders, t 930, first who de- scribed the attempt of accompanying a given chant with one or more voices, i. e. with the intervals of the fourth, fifth, or eighth in similar motion ; also in two parts, with other inter- vals not consonants ; all very rude experiments. Tone-writ- ing : Syllables of the text placed in parallel lines, or a method of notation invented by him, after the ancient Grecian, by means of an alphabetical letter ; never came into use.
