AUen, King, WiUmot, Durkee, Tuck and Giddings felt it their duty to live up to the assurance previously held out. On the assembhug- of the House next morning, there was great ner- vousness among Whigs, and the writer was often inquired of whether he intended to vote for such a man as Mr. Brown ? To these inquiries he replied that he believed it a duty to vote for Mr. Brown, in o...rder to maintain the constitutional rights of the people, which had been dis- regarded by the Speaker of the previous Congress. Those members who made the inquiry admitted that the writer had acted frankly and hon- estly, but declared that they had not believed that he would ever vote for Mr. Brown. The Whigs had elected their candidate to the Presidency, and could have elected a Speaker, by taking any member pledged to sustain the constitutional right of petitioa, by a proper arrangement of committees ; but they would not, and now they saw their p&rty must soon be dis- banded.
