Mr. Chase kept it until his death, in November, 1840. For many years the Masonic fraternity held their regular meetings there. Mr. Chase was succeeded by his son- in-law, Amos A. Watson, and he by his brother, Ebenezer Watson. The name was changed from D, Chase's Tavern to that of the Sullivan House in April, 1841. It has been kept by George E. Bingham, the White brothers, Horace A. Perry, Eli C. Marsh & Son, James Leet, Francis Raflerty, H. C. Fitch & Son, and by others for short periods. It h...as been a public house up to the present time. Frank F. Pitcher is the proprietor.
THE BILL BARNES TAVERN.
About 1790, Bill Barnes built the large two-story house on North street, known as the Barnes place, and kept a tavern many years. Near the present junction of North and Spring streets was a sign, hung to a tall post, on which was painted the picture of an animal supposed to be a lion, and an inscription directing the way to " Bill Barnes's Tavern. " In the house was a large hall where the Free Masons held their regular meetings for a time, and which was a favorite place for balls and dancing parties.
