Harvard College had struck to the foe, and old Massachusetts was no longer swayed by the Puritans. The children one by one had dropped away from the cold and gloomy asceticism of the old church, and at last, at the end of the second century from the commencement of the religious experiment, the balance sheet showed it to 11* 126 PILGRIHISM.
