Wilson, a noted lute-player, was one of the performers, and Edward Low would sometimes conduct, on which occasions Ellis would take up the counter- tenor or viol, and Thomas Jackson the bass-viol. Wood does not mention what instrument he himself played at these practices, but he studied the violin when in the country in a somewhat amateurish manner.
