He who instructs by indirect and figurative methods, and, avoiding literal statements, delights in allusion and analogy, supposes one or both of two things ; viz. Both these assumptions appear to me to pervade the whole ministr...y of Christ ; to have opened his lips in parables, as the natural speech of religion ; and to explain in part, why "never man spake like this man. " The essence of parable obviously consists in this ; that its representations are typical and mediate, not literal and direct ; special and picturesque not abstract and philosophic ; moral in their unity and movement, not logical. Hence it will be found the fittest instru- ment in religion for the expression of Belief, of Worship, and of the sanctities of Conscience.
