WILLIAM
... AND MARY With the ascension of Mary and her Dutch husband, William of Orange, to the English throne, Dutch influences prevailed. Many of the court attaches were Dutch and brought much of their furniture with them. English workmen copied these patterns with such changes as their taste suggested and a new style was gradually developed which became known as William and Mary.
General simplicity of ornament prevailed, veneering came into style and Dutch inlaying was popular.
The William and Mary type was really the beginning of Queen Anne style but had some distinct features which entitled it to a place of its own.
