Icaria once numbered its hundreds of dis- ciples. Most of them have disappeared, seemingly swallowed up in the mass of American society; but if the truth could be ascertained they would, in all probability, still be found to be communists at heart.
One would not unnaturally suppose that the at- tempts to form new communities would be made by new men who had not experienced the almost insuperable difficulties of such an enterprise. The fact is that the new propositions almost always come from men who have had abundance of dis- heartening experience, but who have a limitless stock of hope and faith.
