S of a superior quality. In the same, formation beds of a very fine fire-clay are found.

Alturas has an area of over 19, 000 square miles, or larger than Vermont and New Hampshire combined. It is about 200 miles in length, with a width varying from 70 to 130 miles. It is the banner county of the Territory, not only in size, but also in wealth and population.
