Born in Stockbridge, near Edinburgh. He visited Italy, but later established himself permanently in Edinburgh, and was made president of the Edinburgh Society of Artists in 1812.
In 1 8 15 he became a member of the Royal Academy, and in 1822 was appointed "His Majesty's Limner for Scotland." His portraits are distinguished for great breadth of treatment and character.
