Population (1901), 2,056. The town con- tains a post office and a vernacular school, and to the north are the remains of an old fort called Bairatgarh. The estate, which is held Digitized by VjOOQ IC BADRINATH 179 by one of the first-class nobles of Mewir, c...onsists of 1 1 7 villages. The income is about Rs. 72,000, and a tribute of about Rs. 3,300 is paid lo the Darbar. The Thakurs of Badnor belong to the Mertia branch of the Rathor clan of Rajputs, and claim descent from Duda, a younger son of Rao Jodha. The first and most distinguished of the family was Jai Mai, who was killed at Chitor fighting against Akbar in 1567.
