What a sacrifice the war has meant to them of all they hold most dear, and how utterly unsuited in temperament and education many of them must be, having had in a moment, without any real preparation, to exchange their churches for the front. Think how repugnant the whole life must be to many of them, and yet this lieutenant owned that their whole bearing was dif- ferent fron>, and infinitely superior to THE FRENCH PEASANT 59 those around them.
