The parents did not like the character that was making in their family and were willing to try a new prescription for the cure of New England souls. The observer who reports the case says it may be an unusual one, and that he would not write about it if it were not that he had attended service in seventeen churches since he had been East, and "the handful present in each" made him want to stir New England up to develop "a more united, vigourous, intelligent, and Christian Protestantism, and then come West and help us." It is no trouble to guess that some kind of religion is going to grow vigourously in our country, and that if the prevailing [136] CHARACTER AND MONEY forms of Protestantism don't hold their old fields and do their old work some- thing else will take their place.
