The moralizing stanza at the close added weight, with minds of a certain cast, to the picturesque impressiveness of the poem. A comparison between the third line of the second stanza as it was originally printed and as it stands now is an instructive lesson in poetic art. The first version reads : "As darkly painted on the crimson sky Thy figure floats along." Perfect, sang the chorus of reviewers, and were wrong, aa Bryant saw, for a painted figure can 40 neither float iior a^jpear to float. T...he second I version runs : j " As darkly limued upon the crimson sky," ; wliicli was open to the same objection as the first version. The line stands in the last edition : " As darkly seen against the crimson sky," whicli is strictly true of a waterfowl floating ^ against a background of twilight. : We come to minute picturesqueness in " Green ' River,'" and a lightness of touch we have never seen before. This poem is the most autobiogra- phic that Brj-ant has written, in that it ex- presses his regret at his enforced absences from nature, and his dissatisfaction with the law, which was now his profession.
