The sky along Broadway had become 1 82 In One Man's Life well-nigh black with wires by 1885, roofs were netted with them. Not only were they unsightly, but dan- gerous. Winter storms covered them with sleet, and great masses of ice were hkely to fall, to the serious injury of the multitudes passing below. Further- more, storm and rust were bad for the service. From all points it became imperative that some safer dis- position should be made of the wires.
