As the fire lasted several days, the people began to rebuild one part of the city while the rest was still burning. Before the scourge had ceased to afflict them, the mayor of ...the city issued this proclamation : " Since it has pleased Almighty God, to whose will we humbly bow, to cast upon our city a terrible calamity which demands our most ener getic efforts for the maintenance of good order and the relief of sufferers : let it be known that the word and the credit of Chicago are hereby pledged to defray all necessary expenses. " Then follows the announcement of the measures to be taken to secure public assistance and good order, thanks to which, "with the help of God, " the peace and welfare of all will be safeguarded.
