In general, the steadiness of mind and fortitude of the victims are remarkable, but there are cases in which the resolution falters, and there is a desperate desire to escape, but this is all but hopeless ! The night, however, was dark and rainy, and the poor woman scorched and frightened, managed to disentangle herself from the corpse, crept away from the pile and managed to hide herself among some brushwood. She was unhappily discovered, and her relations dragged her forth, insisting that she should throw herself on the pile again, or drown or hang herself She pleaded for her life at the hands of her own son, and declared that she could not embrace so horrid a death, but in vain. Unable to persuade her to enter the flames, they quickly tied her hands and feet and cast her into the fire, where she was instantly consumed.
