Griffin, of " Bluebell " notoriety — all of whom I well remember — and Thomas Attwood, concern- ing whom it is here to be mentioned that, born in London in 1767, having sung as a boy in the Chapel Royal until his voice broke, travelled in Italy and Germany, studying under Mozart. In 1796 he became organist of St. Paul's Cathedral and composer to the Chapel Royal ; subsequently, he received the additional appoint- ments of organist to the Chapels Royal at Brighton and St. James's. He devoted him...self to his duties with earnestness, and wrote a number of fine anthems, as well as other works. Two of these were anthems for the coronations of George IV. and William IV. respectively. He undertook a third such work for the corona- tion of our present most gracious Queen Victoria, but died, March, 1838, without completing it; although I read that the one composed for the coronation of George IV. was sung as the young Queen entered the abbey, entitled, " I was glad." Another important institution at that time was that termed The Concerts of Antient Music, or Ancient Concerts as they were; generally called, also the Kings Concerts, established 1776 ; THE MUSIC OF THE VICTORIAN ERA.
