Example 1. Solve the equation x^ — 32.
Solution. Taking square roots, x = ± V32 = ± 4 V2. If it is desired to express this root in decimals, we approximate the square root of 2 and multiply the result by 4.
Example 2. Solve a;^ = 6 + 2 V5.
Solution. By §201, a; =V6-f 2 V5 = ±(V5 + 1).
In case such an equation arises in a concrete problem, we must decide by direct application to the problem which of the two roots gives the required solution.
