Charles Leopold Matthies was the first man in the State of Iowa, and in the United States, to tender a military company to the Government, to aid in crushing the rebellion.
The tender was made by letter through Governor Kirkwood, on the 9th day of January, 1SG1 . The general can not be proud- er of the distinction which this act has secured him, than is the State of Iowa.
General Matthies is a Prussian by birth, and was born in Bromberg, on the 31st day of May, 1824.
