To a large number of these, the saving of this stipend was sufficient to determine their choice in favour of the free National School. Their de- parture from the intermediate schools left many of these without adequate support ; and they soon disappeared from many localities, leaving a large, and important section of the community (who are too proud to send their children to the free schools) absolutely powerless to obtain for them, not only the humble measure of classical and mathematical teac...hing which they require, but that amount of English learning, essential to their progress in life.
In those intermediate schools there was much useful teaching. The want, which their disappearance from many localities has created, was recently strongly illus- trated. The Benchers of the Honourable Society of King's Inns, a few years ago, instituted a preliminary examination, in school literature, including arithme- tic, geography, and a little Latin, as a test of qualiii- cation to become an attorney's apprentice.
