The founders of the Society 137 IRELAND IN THE LAST FIFTY YEARS have also been the founders of the Depart- ment of Agriculture, and thereby of a co-ordination of local democratic authorities witli a public office in the management of economic affairs which is unique in the United Kingdom. More- over, the working of the local co-opera- tive societies themselves has not been without effects which may ultimately prove to have great political value.
