Given the lin- guistic conditions of Istria, and the absolute pre- — 4:2 — dominance of Italian, the only language needed for daily use, it will be easily understood how, in the past, nearly all the elementary schools were Italian. If in some places in the interior it was found expedient to open a Slav school, the tea- ching of Italian had always a first place in it.
