Long would not have gone to all the trouble he did to make good his claim. But on the publication of Morton's paper the medical profession in Georgia urged on Dr. Long to make good his claim and the claim of his native state, Georgia, to the great honour.
It now became a duty and as such he determined to carry it out ; and to do so he took counsel with friends, amongst others with the Editor of the ^^ Southern Medical and Surgical Journal" who in 1849, writes: '*A few months ago Dr. Long inform...ed us of his early attempts at etherization in surgery. He was then informed that any claim set up at this late day to priority of discovery would be severely criticised, if not violently resisted; and that he had best, therefore, do all he could to fortify his position." And he further adds of Dr. Long, that he '*is a highly worthy member of the medical profession, exceedingly modest in his pretentions and entitled to full credit for all he advances." It is unfortunate that he should have postponed the announcement of his discovery.
