The simplicity with which Brahms treats Goethe's poems (there are two in this collection) seems a further proof of his artistic tact.
Goethe's lyric art is so perfect, so self- contained, that its effect can hardly be enhanced by music; Brahms therefore leaves it to produce its own effect in its original form, and only drapes it with music as with a suitable garment.
