If one comes in, the other moves out. Thej can not abide each other's company. It is not that they are not congenial only; they are deadly foes. Where one of them lives the other can not live. They can not breathe the same at- mosphere. I think Matthew Henry is correct when he suggests that we must distinguish here between what is ordinarily called fear and being afraid. That is, between the fear of God, which means veneration of him, and a tender, loving fear of offending him and grieving him,... and being sus- picious that he will not care for us, or dreading him. There is a reverent fear which is consistent with perfect love ; but there is a being afraid of God that arises from a sense of guilt, or from a doubt of his love toward us. It is this latter fear that can not live with love. John assures us that perfect love casteth out fear, and he declares that 143 1 14 JOHN AND HIS FRIENDS.
in so doing it casts ont torment, for this sort of fear is a disquieting, torturing passion. Nothing can be more terrible, a more deadly' foe to peace and happiness, than a suspicion or dread that God has forgotten us, or is indifferent to us, or that he is angry with us.
