The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries brought a large crop of Latin Advent hymns, of the same type, into the various French SOME FAMOUS ADV...ENT HYMNS 399 breviaries, from which thirty or forty years ago several passed into our English hymn-books. The best of them is Charles Coffin's * On Jordan's bank' (H. A. M. 50, C. H. 71), both translations being revisions of Mr. Chandler's. Of our English hymns on the First Advent, the one to which I would give the palm is undoubtedly Doddridge's noble ' Hark, the glad sound ! the Saviour comes, ' written December 28, 1735, probably (as was his custom) to be sung after a sermon on St. Luke iv. 17-19.
