Born in 1788 in Marblehead, Massachu- setts, William Fowle came to Alexandria and formed a business partnership with Thomas Lawrason. Their highly successful shipping firm (Lawrason & Fowle) trans- ported goods to and from N...ew England.
William went on to become president of Alexandria Canal Company and the Old Dominion Bank. He was also the founder of the Alexandria Water and Gas Compa- ny. He married Esther Dashiell Taylor (cat. 9s) in 1808, and the couple is reputed to have had eighteen children — eight of whom survived to maturity.
