Settlement of this region, part of the area known as "southside" Virginia, progressed more slowly than in the northern Piedmont and Shenandoah Valley.
The lack of good river transportation to the east and expense and difficulties of overland trade with ports such as Norfolk no doubt contributed to the slow development of this region.
