The award was given "in grateful recognition of his interest in and friendship to the State of South Carolina and her people." In May 1984 he was elected chairman of the Board of Trustees of Gammon Theological Seminary and... elected to the Interdenominational Theological Center Board of Trustees. He also served on the Board of Trustees of Emory Gniversity. He was very active at every level in the life of the church. He was a delegate to the General Conference and SEJ Conference in 1984 and 1988. In addition to serving on several boards of the Memoirs 328 SC Annual Conference, he served on the General Board of Church and Society, which is concerned with social justice issues. Most recently he served as president of the General Commission on Religion and Race, which is concerned with racial inclusiveness within the life of the church and the world at large.
