A Clergyman in the North of England was walking with his daughter one morning, when they were overtaken by a vio- lent storm of thunder and lightening, accompanied with a heavy shower of rain, which obliged them to take shelter in the cot- 14 JUVENILE tage of a poor peasant who had ten children, and no- thing more to support them with than the pro- duce of his labour. IT The clergyman was so hurt at the pitiful condi- tion of the poor man, that he resolved to provide some means of relieving his dis- tress ; and when he got home, he prevailed on one of his parishoners, who was a gardener, to employ them in the day, and he would instruct them in the evening.
They soon began to read and write very well, and as a reward to their kind benefactor, they ge- nerously offered to culti- vate his garden as long a& he should live.
