[37] Experiment No. 29 TEST rOR ACIDITY OR ALKALINITY OF SOIL AND DETERMINATION OF LIME REQUIREMENTS Place about 10 o". of soil in a beaker and add 75 cc. dis- tilled water. After evaporating the filtrate to an approxi- mate volume of 20 cc., stir for about five minutes and filter.
Test the filtrate with phenolphthalein indicator to see if the solution is alkaline or acid. If the solution is alkaline, then determine whether it is due to Na„COg, Na.^SO^, or CaCO^ in solution.
