In the early decade of the eighteenth century an " eminent manufacturer " in Manchester was at his warehouse at six in the morning. At seven, he and his children and apprentices took "a plain breakfast " together.

" 2 No wonder that a guinea for merely " altering" a wig seemed an " extravagancy " to old Mr Byrom, who could procure the raw material at a much lower cost from his daughter's head.
