But ere we confide the religion of our people to the growth and multiplication of these churches, we should like to know in how far they have filled up those blank spaces, which, in the course of an increasing population, our national churches have left behind them. In the deficiency of our existing apparatus, the Voluntary Principle has had an ample field for the trial of its energies ; and we desire to understand, whether, in virtue of those spontaneous and expansive properties which have bee...n ascribed to it, the mighty surplus of our un- provided millions has indeed been overtaken. In this land of perfect toleration, there has been no want of liberty for the great experiment; and now, at the end of at least a century, since chapels may without let or hindrance have been planted in each vacant portion of the territory, let us be told, whether all the national and all the voluntary churches together be commensurate to the exigen- cies of our augmented population. When reckon- ing the outcast multitude in our land who congre- gate nowhere, and that because there were no cheap and accessible places of worship which could take them in, we at that time appealed to them as evidence of the insufficiency of a free trade in nfe^^Otl' ligion.
