...In re, William Rawle, my grand- father, I am aware that his view on the "Con- stitution of the United States" was used as a text-book at West Point, but I do not recollect in what years it was. Gen. R. E. Lee, et al. , said that they were taught by that book while at West Point. * * * General Lee told Bishop Wilmer, of Louisiana, that if it had not been for the instruction he got from Rawle's text-book at West Point he would not have left the Old Army and joined the South at the breaking out of the late war between the States.
