There are three men this Union will never for- give. They have given it too much trouble. They are Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and James Long- street." General Longstreet said, " Those who are for- given much, love much, Mr. President." Johnson an- swered, " You have high authority for that statement.
General, but you cannot have amnesty." It was shortly afterwards granted by act of Congress, General Long- street's name being added to a list of prominent Con- federate officers by the especial request of Grant.
