...ing cut of $27,5 million in FY97. The Administration has proposed an increase of $10.8 million in FY98 for the weather service, but unless Congress approves this level, further deep personnel cuts will be necessary.
As an example of the risk to public safety resulting from these cuts, National Weather Service officials point out that three Coast Guard crewmen died in February off the coast of Washington when their boat capsized in rough seas during a rescue. The seas were forecast to be 12 to 15 feet high, but were actually as high as 24 feet.
