In short they were of acharacter front which nothing could be expected that was candid andimpartial; nothing but what a weak or crafty understanding could supplytowards confirming those prejudices with which they happened to bepossessed, especially where religion was the subject, which above allother motives strengthens every bias, and inflames every passion of thehuman mind.
