Is enim eloquens est qui et humilia suhtiliter et magna graviter et mediocria tem- perate potest dicere. It was on the occasion of the visit of Lafayette to our country that the ancient college of Harvard, by the golden mouth of one of its sons — Edward Everett — long time the first scholar in public life in the United States, laid, August 26, 1824, its tribute of rever- ence and affection before him in a chaste and beautiful oration of unanswerable power of reasoning, to show that republican institutions, to found which Lafayette had acted his devoted and heroic part, are favorable to the advancement of literature and the fine arts.
