It is now clear that to speak of a religion with- out morality is as false as to speak of a morality without religion. No Christian teacher means to separate the two : I wish I could say that none appears to do so. Faith without works is dead, being alone. Our faith is one which wo...rketh by love. A faith that does not produce love and hope is no true faith ; and where these are there is morality, there is glad obedience to the law of Christ. There may, no doubt, be a morality of a kind that does not belong to any very high or in- structed faith. There may be prudence, fairness, courtesy, temperance, family affection, amongst those who do not pretend to study Christian faith, and even speak lightly of such a study. Are they without faith, however ? There are in their lives, perhaps, many signs of a belief in a higher law than mere social calculations, and to that extent they live by faith.
