From that time until the surrender of General Lee, Colonel Briscoe, with his regiment, one thousand strong, was contin ually in the field, and though wounded during the assault on Fort Gregg, was pushed forward by his men, and was one of the first to cross the parapet. In the pursuit of Lee the regiment took part, and was engaged in the battle of Appomattox Court House, so that from one of the earliest until the last battle of the war, Briscoe has taken part in POPE S CAMPAIGN. 67 every engagem...ent in which the Army of the Potomac or the Army of James has participated.
The writer apologizes for this digression by saying, that it gives him pleasure to speak of the conduct of such men. Briscoe s is not an isolated case. There are hundreds in our armies who, without patronage or favoritism, have, by their own talents, worked their way up from the ranks to the positions to which their merits have entitled them. Without the aid of such men the armies of the Union never would have been victorious.
