The men on horseback followed. . Every lit- tle distance they passed animals of the herd that had given out on the way, but the men continued to follow the main herd until nearly daylight, when suddenly they came to a beautiful spring of water. The scene that followed can better be imagined than described! Within two hours from the time the strongest animals had reached the spring a number of those left behind came staggering along. Others had died.
After a few hours rest the men drove the catt...le- LIFE OF DAVID P. K1MBALL 37 back to camp, a distance of about ten miles, and were overjoyed to learn that David had found the Hackberry water, two miles away, which was the means of saving the lives of the campers. The water here was in a deep well, which doubtless accounts for the animals not scenting it. If the Kimball party had discovered the nearby water that night it would have prevented the death of many of their cattle, to say nothing of the trouble it caused them in other directions.
