The officers amused themselves as well as they could in the little besieged city ; but, for want of fresh pro- visions, the distress was beginning to be great. The officers of the Continental army were all of opinion that an attack on Boston at that time (September) was unwise ; and the Commander-in-chief gave up the idea, though inaction was exceedingly disa- greeable to him.
