He supported earnestly the bill to establish free schools, and opposed most bills making any appropriation not neces- sary for the support of the government. This session he was accorded a place on the Committee on Public Education, and has been conspicuous in supporting measures of retrenchment and reform in all departments of public expenditure, and especially in checking the extravagance in the printing of useless documents.
