It is not unusual for him, for example, to commence a platform address at a missionary meeting thus: 234 THE CHRISTIAN MAN OF LETTERS : *^ The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us alL Amen." On another occasion, alluding to those same words, he remarks : ^^ I have no more doubt of ^ the communion of the Holy Ghost' than I have of * the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,' or of * the love of the Father ;' but I do not enjoy it as I ou...ght, as I might, and as I pray daily that I may." It is because he is gradually realizing more intense- ly the Spirit's in-dwelling that his outward walk, and even person, are contracting a more heavenly hue. Like that '^ hope" of which the poet so beau- tifully fflngs, he almost literally, " tnth nplifted foot, set free from earth, Pants for the place of his ethereal birth, And crowns the soul, whUeryet a mourner here.
With wreaths like those triumphant spirits wear." .
A friend who was with him one morning in a large circle, when Montgomery was invited to lead the devotions, felt ^Uhe fervor, the simplicity, and the sweetness" of his breathings, as if already foretastes of heaven.
