Loring for gallant behaviour under the fire of Fort Darling, serving the guns admirably; his energy and coolness were everything which could be wished. '^ He next served in the Mississippi River Squadron; was captured May 6, 1864, and endured the horrors of a Texas stockade for six months; escaped and was retaken; again escaped with one companion, and reached Brashier, La. , after weeks of dreadful struggles. After the war he had a position in the navy yard at Washington, D. C. Later he entered... the revenue (naval) service; was commissioned heutenant July 20, 1872.
In 1872 he settled at Owego, N. Y. ; lived a quiet, un- ostentatious life. Was greatly respected; never used tobacco and was strictly temperate.
He died December 5, 1902.
*Mr. John Arthur Loring's manuscript contains one hundred and twenty typewritten pages descriptive of the career and experiences of this hero; those interested may read them at the library of the N. E. Historic Genea- logical Society, Boston, Mass.
