So long since as 1820, the author's attention was especially drawn towards this point, and he regrets that he cannot even now change, in one iota, the opinion he then formed, with regard to the class of persons usually engaged, in public as well as private asy- lums, to sustain the multifarious duties of attendants.
It would seem almost to have escaped the notice of those who have the superintendence or conducting of these establishments, that it is not a question of bodily strength only, howev
...er indis- pensable this may be ; but that till more attention is paid to their eligibility as companions, as well as attendants, these institu- tions will never be conducted as they ought to be. For although it may happen that in fifty, or even a hundred cases, there may not be above eight or ten sufficiently convalescent to occupy their minds with subjects congenial to their former pursuits ; — yet if there be but one single individual of a superior and intelligent mind, it becomes a paramount duty, that the person with whom he or she is brought most frequently into contact, — as of course, will be the case with the attendant, — should possess a mind equal to any subject which may interest or engage the attention of the patient.
